Why does the AirFit N30 leak and what are better options?Updated 2 months ago

The ResMed AirFit N30 can sometimes leak due to a few common reasons:

  1. Improper Sizing – If the nasal cradle cushion is too large or too small, it may not seal properly under the nose. ResMed provides three different cushion sizes (Small, Medium, Small-Wide), and using the wrong one can lead to leaks.
  2. Side Sleeping Pressure – Since the AirFit N30 is a minimal-contact mask, sleeping on your side may sometimes dislodge the cushion, leading to leaks. The thin headgear can also shift during movement.
  3. Face and Nose Shape - Like all CPAP masks, face and nose shape plays the largest role in getting a secure fit. The N30 is the most minimal mask, although it has superior comfort it may tend to leak more than other masks.

Better Alternatives for Reducing Leaks

If you’re experiencing frequent leaks with the AirFit N30, here are a few alternative CPAP masks that might work better:

  1. ResMed AirFit N30i – Similar to the N30 but features a top-of-the-head hose connection, which keeps tubing out of the way. The cushion also wraps under the nose for a more stable seal, making it a better option for side sleepers.
  2. ResMed N20 – This mask is more structured and holds high pressures better with less leaks.
  3. ResMed P10 – A nasal pillow mask with a secure fit and lightweight design. It seals directly into the nostrils, reducing leaks compared to under-the-nose designs.

If you often experience leaks with the AirFit N30, trying a different size or switching to a more stable nasal or nasal pillow mask might be the best solution.
